TW-09 Mining Pay Office & Davy Buchanan
The sense of community both within and between the villages of East Dunbartonshire can been seen in many stories.
One of these is that of Davy Buchanan, a local to Twechar with Down’s Syndrome. Davy was known to many as he played the accordion with dance bands regularly at late-night dancing in Kilsyth, and, while he wasn’t officially employed by the Coal Board, he worked at the mines where he would be paid a wage by the other men who worked there. The community looked out for Davy whether that was by giving him a lift or walking with him to places, or gathering a collection so that he could stand in the queue at the Pay Office and get a wage packet too for his work.
