KW-03 Gateway Marker - William Patrick Library
This artwork was created by sculptor Marion Smith, whose practice centres on creating site-specific commissions that embody a considered understanding of their context.
Features the depiction of a Lappet weaving pattern and a representation of the old Market Cross which was not far from this spot. It was thought to have been an octangular pillar with many steps. Lappet Weaving was a speciality in Kirkintilloch in the 19th century, it was used to produce fine material with the appearance of being embroidered. You can see an example of Lappet used in a head covering on display at the Kirkintilloch Heritage Centre.
