WB-03 Cairnhill Wood

Cairnhill Wood Green Man

Cairnhill woods were once part of the farmland, orchards and parkland that made up the Garscube Estate. Housing development from the 1920s left a narrow strip of woodland running along the hilltop from Canniesburn in the north to Switchback Road in the south.

Westerton’s Cairnhill Woods Group, alongside East Dunbartonshire’s Council’s Greenspace Team secured funding in 2014 from the Central Scotland Green Network Community Project. This funding was to go towards improving and encouraging use of Cairnhill woods. The project had the aim of encouraging local people, particularly children, to get involved.
To encourage use, new animal wood carvings by Iain Chalmers of Chainsaw Creations were added to the woods. Younger children from Westerton Nursery were taken to watch the dead trees being carved into bears and all sorts of other animals. The animal woodcarvings were designed with additional help from the children of Westerton Primary School.
