Trails
Home
Home, is designed as a series of sculptural way-markers. Located in Milngavie, the work is influenced by a range of heritage themes relating to the area and it’s rich history, all of which will filter down into a series of sculptures sited on the trail between the town centre and Mugdock Country Park. A number of smaller ‘way-markers’ have been designed that will lead people to and from a larger focal piece at the Iron Bridge, off Clober Road. In formal terms, the works are based on the shape of an old cottage, many fine examples of which can still be seen around the area and which were dwellings and places of work in and around Milngavie. Blonde sandstone, which was once quarried at Mugdock for use in construction in Milngavie, has been cut to form the top sections of the way-markers.The concrete plinths hold a mixture of cast-in and acid etched text referencing the names of former industrial sites and their workers. These sculptures act almost as memorials to lost local industries and specific buildings associated with them, as well as carrying individual markers that identify the name of someone associated with that industry. This addresses the anonymity and lack of names of workers associated with these industries and personalises in some way through the naming of someone. The generic, repeated forms, keep the objects simple and their embellishment of text gives them each a distinct identity and narrative.
