Archway
Archway created for Lennoxtown is a cast of a window made by the artist, directly from the ruins of Lennox Castle. The chosen window contained two window remnants from the original castle as well as an interior window, possibly from its time as a mental institution. The building texture was of weathered sandstone and the interior window was wooden. Bearing the history of the building in mind, the sculpture is intended to read as a commemorative monument of resilience and survival. The sculpture acts as a gate and a framing device to the surrounding landscape. The chosen material reflects the high iron content of the landscape and by proxy the heritage of local industry. The chosen colour and material references a story of the River Glazert leaking iron deposits from the Kali Nailworks in the 1970s, colouring everything around it red. When walking around the trail the artist noted that small burns or creeks were still running rust coloured. There is also a reference to the famous red Jasper deposits of the Campsie Fells and an intended element of ageing in the material used, similar to the many rusted objects found along the trail.
