Elspeth Bennie

Role: Artist: Metal Forging
Activity: Metal Forging, Sculpture, Visual Arts
About:

Elspeth studied sculpture at Glasgow School of Art and St Martins School of Art. As a practicing artist her work follows two strands – an artist blacksmith, designing and manufacturing high end forged metal commissions, as well as a practicing sculptor with a wide portfolio of public art projects – many of which have involved participatory practice, either at the design stage or through active involvement at the making stage.

Elspeth identifies a crossover between the two strands with each informing the other; believing that having hands on making skills are important as a sculptor and enjoying passing those skills on as part of her participatory practice by engaging children and adults in the forging process. Recent projects have included a Heritage Learning Residency in Kirkintilloch, Possil Meadows Bollards project with Childrens’ Inclusion Partnership, new gates for Campsie Cemetery, Lennoxtown and the Royston Star, a community project with Spire View Housing Association.
