We had a great visit to Twechar Healthy Living Centre for our 8th Trails and Tales’ Women’s History event. Over the past year we have been visiting a number of towns and villages with Glasgow Women’s library, encouraging people to share stories of women locally and across East Dunbartonshire that have made an impact on people’s lives. Women’s stories have been mapped and include everything from public figures, politicians, sports personalities, artists, writers and especially those women who have impacted on people and communities locally.

In Twechar we heard of Nurse Barrowman, famous Twechar midwife who was remembered fondly by many, not only as a nurse, but for her ‘Strawberry Fayres’ where she opened up her garden to the local children; Jenny Beveridge, another Twechar midwife who lived and worked in the ‘Raws’‘ and Jean Ross, nicknamed affectionately ‘mean Jean’ for her campaigning work she did on behalf of the Twechar community and Sandra Sutton, our host and current Chair of the Twechar healthy living centre herself, noted by those attending as a woman whose achievements for the community of Twechar should be recorded. Twechar also saw our biggest turn out of men! They contributed enthusiastically and knowledgably about Twechar women and added to a great evening of entertainment and sharing.

Our next event will be in Baldernock Primary School on the 26th November and all are welcome. if you’d like to come along to this event, please let us know by contacting Info@trailsandtales.org or 0141 777 3092
